Traveling is an expensive hobby, but that’s what the Intersession class Traveling on a Budget addresses. It teaches students that anyone can travel, but that budgets are still important and something students should keep in mind when planning their future trips.
Traveling on a Budget is one of the many classes offered during Danville High School’s three-day-period of Intersession. It’s taught by Megan Berketis, a teacher at DHS, and is fueled by her love of traveling. In this class, students learn the basic components of travel: transportation, lodging, food and entertainment. Students, then, plan their own hypothetical trips with these components in mind.
Catherine Bushnell, a student who participated in this course, joined the class because they thought the material taught was going to be interesting.
Ms. Berketis hopes for students to “gain a sense of what goes into planning a trip.”. Students should be able to travel with a carefree feeling and be able to enjoy their future trips to the fullest.
“It is important for young people to know that traveling isn’t something that needs to be out of anyone’s budget,” she said.
The message of the class is that travel is an experience that should be shared by many: rich or poor, group or solo. It’s not something that needs to be restricted to any specific group for any reason. Anyone should be able to travel, and they should be able to enjoy it to the fullest regardless of socioeconomic status.
“This is my first year at DHS, and thus my first Intersession experience,” Mrs. Berketis said, “It has been an enriching experience for me, and hopefully for my students as well.”
