Intersession has been a long tradition at Danville High School. It allows students to explore topics they previously would not have been able to. Courses were three days long in 2025 and varied from slime-making to health care courses. Ms. Teena Kissee offered the Nursing Career Study course during this year’s Intersession. This course covered a wide range of content related to the health field. Harper Ranson, a freshman at Danville High School is one of the students who took this class.
“We have learned CPR and are CPR certified, and how to do the Heimlich, suturing, and injections,” Ranson said.
She said, “I have been able to learn more [than in a normal class].”
Ranson is also in the nursing pathway at DHS. Despite this, she said this course gave her more opportunities than traditional classes.
Ms. Kissee said the goal of the allied health classes is to “provide students with insight into careers” and give them a chance to obtain industry certifications.
“These students will have the necessary skills to obtain gainful employment during and following graduation,” she said. “This program will provide certification options, job shadowing, dual credit, and in the future we are hoping to provide internships and job co-op experiences as well.”
Intersession is also meant to be a fun way for students to explore and engage in different classes. This course is especially engaging because of informative demonstrations and hands-on activities.
“Students in the pathway have been welcoming and supportive,” Kissee said. “Students remain engaged in hands-on activities which greatly enhance content involvement and retention”.
When asked what her favorite part of the Nursing Career Study is and if students seem to enjoy it, Ranson responded,“My favorite part has been learning about surgery. They [students] seem like they are engaged and having fun.”
